the art of backbends

OVERVIEW

Build the strength, awareness and mobility to safely deepen your backbend practice.


Course Information

This course combines drills, assists and transitions inspired by yoga, contortion and dance that will:

  • Support the development of a strong and solid backbend foundation

  • Provide a wide range of tools and exercises you can incorporate to reach your backbend goals

  • Break down modifications/advancements, wall and partner props and assists for each pose to

  • incorporate into your backbend practice

  • Give you an insight into the anatomy of backbends including alignment, cueing and injury prevention

  • Help you safely transition in and out of poses with confidence, elegance and ease

  • Teach you how to safely cool down and reset your body after approaching deeper backbends


Schedule

Day 1 Friday - Throughout day 1 we will explore the rotation of the shoulders when coming into flipped grip poses, including king pigeon, low lunge, bow, standing splits and dancer’s pose. We will also explore the role of the glutes, hamstrings and hips in backbending.

12-1.30pm - Master Cass - Flipped grip focus
1.45- 2.45pm - Anatomy - Shoulder focus with Joshua LeClair
3-5pm - Modifications/advancements and prop and partner based assists

Day 2 Saturday - Throughout day 2 we will focus on the technique of spinal waves and spirals. We will explore how the spine is built to not only flex, extend, laterally flex and rotate: but also to undulate like a wave. Poses and transitions we will cover include: camel pose, wheel pose, drop back and chest stand.

 9.30-11am - Master Class - Spinal waves focus 11.15am -1pm - Skills and drills
2-4pm - Anatomy - focus spine with Joshua LeClair
4-5pm- Adjustments
5-6pm - Creative shape play - during this class we will play with sequencing, transitions and partner poses

Day 3 Sunday - will explore the biomechanics of scorpion and hollow back and how to approach them from standing, kneeling and wheel pose before taking them upside down. We will also explore backbend after care including how to safely cool down and reset your body after approaching deeper backbends.

4.45-6pm - Thai flow Therapy

 


Accreditation

This course is perfect for keen practitioners and yoga/flexibility teachers looking to deepen their knowledge of backbends.

This course is not recommended for complete beginners however plenty of options and modifications will be given to make it accessible.

LEAD TEACHER

Rebecca Hannah

Rebecca was introduced to yoga through physical theatre and performance. She trained in Ashtanga, Hatha moving her interests to martial arts, Tripsichore Yoga Choreography, calisthenics, mobility, and Kids and Teen Yoga training. Rebecca has taught worldwide, in over 16 different countries. Her own personal practice includes integrating vinyasa with contortion, mobility, calisthenics, and contemporary dance. Rebecca teaches with a rich interdisciplinary approach, exploring the importance of building strength to support flexibility using movement as a tool for mindfulness, communication, creativity and self-expression.

Refunds and cancellation

Course cancellation by student

  • If you cancel prior to 8 weeks before the start of the course,  we will refund 50% of the full price.

  • If you cancel your place less than 8 weeks before the first day of the course, Indaba is unable to offer you a refund. Indaba will endeavour to offer the course place to another student if course is sold and there is a waiting list.

  • If you need to leave the course for any reason once the course has started, we are unable to offer you a refund or defer your course place.

  • In the difficult circumstances of you sustaining a serious injury, Indaba School of Yoga team will support you and work out the best way for you to continue the course. You may still attend sessions and either adjust poses or just observe the classes. If you are unable to continue the training after consultation with a fully qualified medical practitioner we will defer the remaining modules to another course intake but cannot offer a full or partial refund.

  • It is compulsory to attend all of the teaching modules on the course.

Course cancellation by Indaba

In the unlikely event of extenuating circumstances, Indaba reserves the right to cancel the course at any time. If the course is cancelled prior to the course start, the course may be rescheduled and if students cannot attend the new course then 100% refunds will be made. If the course is cancelled part way through the course, Indaba will rearrange the remaining modules of the course and if this is not possible for students to attend, we will refund the remaining course on a pro-rata basis.

COVID-19

  • If you tested positive for COVID-19 before attending an in-person event, you can switch your ticket to the online version of the event, by sending us the official test result.

  • Not all events are held online and while we will try our best to ensure your remote participation, we cannot guarantee it.

  • Neither full nor partial refunds can be given when cancelling a class, course or workshop outside the specified cancellation time.

  • Due to the ongoing nature of COVID-19, we are being flexible about the training structure. According to government advice or COVID-19 situation, some virtual formats can be included in the course structure. By applying for the course, you are deemed to have accepted this flexibility.
